East Turkistan Population in 2000

The 5th China National Census was completed at 0:00 am by Beijing time on Nov 1, 2000. The following outcome of this census was published by Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Statistics Bureau on April 2, 2001.

The Total Population

The total population was 19,250,000 (includes people came from outside, does not include people went outside). It is 18,462,100 excluding the 790,000 people whose permenant residency can not be determined. Compared to the 15,160,000 from the 4th National Censuses conducted on July 1, 1990, the population increased 4,090,000. It is a 26.98% increase over 10 years and 4 months. The average annual net increase is 395,800 people, annual increase rate is 2.34%.

1. Ethnic Composition

Uyghur: 8,677,400, comprise 47% of total population.

Chinese: 7,497,700, comprise 40.61% of the total

The other ethnic groups combined: 2,287,500, comprises12.39%

The Chinese population increased 1,802,300, or 31.64% compared to1990.

The minority population increased 1,503,400, or 15.89% compared to 1990
