But now, as the European Union <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/europe\/eu-proposes-banning-products-made-with-forced-labour-2022-09-14\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debates<\/a> a ban on products made with forced labor, the evidence has just gotten stronger.<\/p>\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/dataverse.harvard.edu\/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910\/DVN\/B92UYJ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new research<\/a> on Xinjiang\u2019s cotton production\u2014the first such research published in a peer-reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1525\/cpcs.2023.1822939\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">academic journal<\/a>\u2014shows that coercive labor transfers for seasonal agricultural work such as cotton picking have continued through at least 2022 and remain part of Xinjiang\u2019s official Five-Year Plan for 2021-25. Economic incentives for this practice persist despite partial mechanization: State media reports from 2022 confirm that the premium-grade long staple cotton grown in southern Xinjiang still cannot be harvested by machines.<\/p>\n<p>Labor transfers subject Uyghurs to state-assigned work placements.
